Finding My Way: A New Muslim’s Journey
A Personal Reflection
At the tender age of nine, I sat in a church, my gaze fixed on a statue of Jesus. A strange feeling stirred within me—a sense of unease, a disconnect between what I was being taught and what my heart instinctively knew. That moment planted a seed of curiosity, a question that would eventually grow into a profound spiritual journey.
Years later, in the 1970s, my path crossed with Islam. My sister had become interested in Islam first. We grow up in all christian family. We had all the best holidays and moments. Oh, how I wish I could share more and more. Islam was not something we had ever heard of. So, it wasn’t planned or expected—it was a chance encounter sparked by the simple yet profound question:
Who is Allah? Who is Muhammad(peace be upon him)?
Intrigued, I began to explore Islam. Reading the Quran felt like finding a long-lost answer to the questions that had lingered since childhood. I read the Holy Quran, I read Hadiths (stories of the live of Prophets and companions) (Peace be upon them). Its timeless wisdom resonated deeply, confirming the truths I had sensed but could never articulate. The concept of One God, free from human form or limitation, aligned perfectly with my innate understanding of the divine.
As I delved further into Islam, I discovered its beautiful emphasis on justice, compassion, and the interconnectedness of all aspects of life. The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) offered guidance not only for spiritual fulfillment but also for navigating the challenges of daily life. The more I learned, the more it became clear—this was the missing piece I had been searching for.
Choosing Islam was not the challenges, but society. Like many new Muslims, I faced skepticism from those around me and wrestled but I never had my doubts and societal pressures. I knew it was the correct way. I jump into my hijab and abaya while on college campus. Yes, it was strange, but these struggles were outweighed by the peace, purpose, and sense of belonging Islam brought into my life.
Becoming a Muslim was not just a decision—it was a revelation. It felt like coming home, a return to my true self. Islam offered me clarity, purpose, and a deeper connection to the Creator.
If you’re searching for truth, I encourage you to explore Islam. Read the Quran, study the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and connect with others who have walked this path.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Take that step today, and open your heart to the beauty and peace of Islam.
Inshallah more of this personal journey will be shared.
